Giamundo Neto Advogados is advising the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and representative companies on the implementation of a pilot reverse logistics project for the collection and recycling of electrical and electronic equipment in São Paulo.
With the advance of technology and the increasing use of electronic products, the disposal of this waste (e-waste) has become a matter of extreme importance and concern, since improper disposal can cause serious environmental damage, such as flooding, soil contamination and other serious problems.
For this reason, the São Paulo City Government, in partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency, is implementing “descarte ON”, a pilot reverse logistics project for recycling electronic waste. Initially, the project will be carried out in the Lapa region. However, collection points are expected to be installed in four other regions of the city by 2020.
Collection is carried out by large retail chains, which have points to receive a wide range of electrical and electronic waste (blenders, juicers, laptops and cell phones, among others). When buying at one of the participating stores, consumers will receive a coupon that can be used to have the replaced electrical or electronic item collected. The products will then be sent to a cooperative specializing in electronic waste, with the aim of making maximum reuse of the material collected.
The data obtained during this program will be used for the future establishment of a waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) recycling system in Brazil.
The “descarte ON” Project is the result of a cooperation agreement between the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade and the Ministry of the Environment, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the São Paulo City Government, through Amlurb, together with associations representing Industry and Commerce.
Partner Camillo Giamundo leads the team providing legal advice to the companies and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on the implementation of the project.
